A Productive Urban Quarter for the Future
Cities thrive through their public spaces. However, modern functional zoning has led to a decline of this vibrant public life, resulting in privatized residential areas, anonymous commercial zones, and uniform city centers.
Our proposal for a new urban quarter in Winnenden embraces the opportunities of digitalization to rethink urban space. It explores the potential of mixed-use development and the creation of spaces for public life, production, community, privacy, and retreat.
The core idea is a creative coexistence with a high degree of spatial, functional, and social density. This density enables diverse spatial conditions that encourage appropriation and active use. Our goal is to create an innovative urban district for Winnenden that demonstrates new approaches to transforming, expanding, and building cities.
The design is based on four key elements: a network of public spaces ensuring efficient circulation and high spatial quality; clearly defined development plots allowing flexible growth; hybrid perimeter block structures; and adaptable modular systems. These modules can accommodate industrial halls, offices, creative spaces, or innovative residential complexes. The development plots enable a wide range of typologies, from large-scale production facilities to green inner courtyards.
The result is a robust and adaptable framework for a productive urban quarter in Winnenden within the context of IBA27.
