The Circle of Democracy in Motion
The democratic experience at Paulsplatz and around Paulskirche is spatially expanded through a circular structure that makes the site accessible and tangible in three dimensions.
Encircling the Paulskirche, a ring opens up the space and creates a dialogue between past and present. An escalator leads visitors from the square up into this elevated structure, offering an open ascent and new perspectives on Germany’s original House of Democracy.
Within the ring, exhibition spaces, event venues, and areas for public exchange create opportunities for learning, discussion, and participation. The Paulskirche can be experienced from multiple viewpoints, beyond the historic assembly hall and beyond the surrounding gallery. Connected to the ring is a rooftop garden, providing a place for reflection and contemplation on democracy.
The existing plane tree grove is preserved. New green spaces, surface unsealing, and measures to enhance biodiversity contribute to a healthier urban climate and a more resilient city.
The result is an ensemble that preserves history while embraces openness, making democracy visible, accessible, and tangible as a shared civic responsibility.
