The Station as Town Center
The proposal revitalizes the station precinct as a new town center by enhancing the existing station ensemble with a multifunctional building and a covered forecourt, creating a strong civic identity and vibrant public destination.
The forecourt is reorganized as a user-friendly mobility hub, while the historic station building is strengthened through extensive green roofing. A compact multifunctional building accommodates retail and gastronomy on the ground floor, co-working spaces above, and two residential units on the top level. A green bicycle shelter and improved public transport and sharing services promote sustainable mobility.
Following the principle of simple construction, the new building combines a clear spatial organization with robust materials and a protective envelope that mitigates railway noise while opening towards the square and surrounding landscape. Light and inviting, it becomes the heart of the ensemble, the living room of Grafrath, offering a place for meeting, working, and everyday life.
