Space for Reflection is the guiding principle that unites this year's BDA Berlin Young Talent Awards. On 9 November 2016 at 19:00 (CET, UTC+1), BDA Berlin invites the public to a special evening of lectures and discussion on architectural theory and practice at the BDA Gallery.
The event marks the opening of an exhibition presenting the award-winning works of the Hans Schaefers Prize for Young Architecture, the Daniel Gössler Commendation for Young Architectural Theory, and the research project by TIBES Scholarship recipient Robert Patz on Virtual Reality Aided Architectural Design. During the evening, the award recipients will offer further insights into their work, addressing fundamental questions of architectural practice from hybrid housing typologies and the concept of atmosphere to the hidden qualities of the Casa Chorizo housing type in Buenos Aires.
The jury regarded the awarded projects as evidence of the essential role of architectural theory in architectural practice. Following the presentations, guests are invited to continue the discussion with the award winners over a glass of wine.
BDA Berlin Young Talent Awards 2016: Every three years, the Association of German Architects (BDA), Berlin Chapter, invites architects and urban planners under the age of 40 to compete for the Hans Schaefers Prize, endowed with €5,000. In 2016, projects and urban planning schemes realized since 2011 were eligible.
The Hans Schaefers Prize 2016 was awarded jointly to:
* Fabian Wichers (NORD STUDIO, Berlin) for the Centre for Contemporary Drawing in Berlin-Mitte.
* Thi Thu Huong Vu and Tuan Dung Nguyen (vn-a, Berlin) for "The Return of the Genius Loci – New Parish Church of Ka Don (Vietnam)", a realized project based on their diploma thesis completed at TU Berlin.
While the Hans Schaefers Prize recognizes realized buildings and planning projects, the Daniel Gössler Commendation honors theoretical contributions to contemporary architectural and urban discourse published since 2011. In 2016, the jury awarded the prize jointly to Karoline Fahl for Atmosphäre am Werk and to Anne Schlebbe and Sebastian Wattenberg for Wohnen als Wagnis – Hybride Wohnformen und die Taktiken der Aneignung. An additional distinction was presented to Riccarda Cappeller for Wohnerfahrung in der Casa Chorizo – Grundform, Variation, Veränderung.
The jury met on 23 September 2016 and included Amandus Samsøe Sattler (chair), Prof. Heike Hanada, Katharina Löser, Alexander Schwarz, Prof. Axel Sowa, and Prof. Dr. Ines Weizman.
Since 2012, BDA Berlin has also awarded the TIBES Scholarship, endowed with €5,000, to support research projects by students, graduates, and doctoral candidates in Berlin. The 2015 scholarship was awarded to Robert Patz for Virtual Reality Aided Architectural Design.
